Novemberisms (part 2)

November 7th: Conversation in the car as I drove Mason to school this morning:
Mason: Megan, I put air in your tires last night so that you don't get a flat tire when you take me to school today.
Me: Well, that was so kind of you! What a help you are to your Daddy.
Mason: Megan, are you going to live with us forever?
Me: No, just until I finish school...which is ending next year!!
Mason: (pause) Are you taking the dog with you?
Me: Yes, I would miss him too much if
I left him! He goes wherever I go.
Mason: (longer pause) Well, you need to stay forever b/c I would miss you (and the dog) too much.

Oh, how I cherish these conversations and the time with the little ones. I was also glad that Adele did not come on the radio b/c I was able to have a conversation with Mason instead of listening to her sing "Rumor Has It" with Adele. Dana, Callie liked Someone Like You, Mason & Clark like Rumor Has It...what is it with children and their love for Adele songs?! ;)  (I tried to upload the video of the kiddos singing Adele songs but it wouldn't work..I'll try some other time!)

November 8th: Sometimes you have days where it's hard to see the silver lining and you can't keep the tears from falling. Where no matter what you do, you can't measure up nor please everyone. On days like today, I'm extra thankful for my Mom. I just had 34 minutes of reassuring words and love piping through the cell phone lines and feel much better and as if I can get through my day now. If
you're having a good day, why not pick up the phone and call someone else to share some of that happiness? If you're having a bad day, why not pick up the phone and reach out to someone to let them help you? You don't have to do it all by yourself.

On a related note, I'm also thankful for Patrick for sending me random texts that cheer me up when I most need it and he doesn't even realize it. Today's winning text of the day is from him: Are you near a video watching capable device? I was checking YoutTube to see if Boyce Ave had any new songs and found their cover of Heaven by one Bryan Adams.

I'm now smiling. =)

November 9th:  November 9th: Wow, what an inspiring testimony we all heard last night when Shari Rigby shared her story. If you haven't seen October Baby.....goooooo see it. It's in Redbox and is such a great movie. I've seen it twice so far and may just have to purchase it or put it on my Christmas list. Today, I'm thankful for the grace & healing that comes along with forgiveness. As my Mom reminded me last night, we all make mistakes, but are still loveable. As Shari said, (paraphrasing here) when God shows up, He does so in a big way as He does nothing on a small scale. Only in God's perfect timing and circumstances, and after we endure, grow in strength, pray without ceasing, in faithfulness, and with His forgiveness, we can be all we are designed to be for there is a purpose. To be human is to be beautifully flawed. ♥

November 10th: Sometimes it's the simple things in life that count. Today, I'm happy for frozen coffee. I just discovered I like this stuff in St. Louis a few days ago when on the way back to NC from Minneapolis. In that time, I've had a coolatta (yummy but tasted too much like coffee as it watered down) from Dunkin Donuts, a mocha frappucino (DELICIOUS but way overpriced!!) from Starbucks, and an iced coffee from IHOP (eh, I like the frozen variety better). To think I don't like coffee at all but like coffee-flavored ice cream, milkshake, and now frozen coffee?! Yes, simple things can be good and for that I'm grateful!
November 11th: I'm happy to spend the morning with one of my favorite veterans. Thank you Rich for leading by example! You're the best Dad a girl could ask for ya know.
November 12th: Don't you just love the silliness you have w/ your closest friends? Where you barely have to say anything and they "get it"?? I'm grateful for fun memories and laughs that have been shared over the years w/ some of my closest buds!! One such silly example is w/ Alana, Michaelann, Monika, Patrick, & Ashley ...b/c we've been laughing our way through multiple states when we see personalized license plates. I can't remember how it started but some that stand out over the years for me are: the one I saw last week: 1BLUBYU (as the car sped by me), DAYUM that I would see ALL the time in West York and which happens to make me think of the Ravens afternoon with Alana & Ash (but that's another story!), and Patrick's personal fav: LVNGMYDRM. Hehehe.

November 13th: Today typically holds bad memories but at this moment right now, I'm thankful I have a studious pup who thinks he can help with my dissertation. Hey, if you can't beat 'em why not join 'em?!

Novemberisms (part 1)

November is one of my favorite months and Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday.  I decided on November 1st to try to think of at least 1 thing I was grateful for each day and post on Facebook.  I must say that blessings have rained down me since keeping track of them over the past 30 days.  Just in the last week alone, this was evident from receiving a thoughtful text from a former co-worker letting me know my presence in my old schools was still missed to current students' emails thanking me for the guidance and instruction I provided as their professor this past semester to a "shout out" on a radio station in California, I was blessed beyond measure.  Let's all try to be thankful not just during this holiday season but all throughout the year!

November 1:  Today is the first day of one of my favorite months leading up to my favorite holiday. In honor of November and Thanksgiving, I will be posting a status relating to what/whom I'm thankful for each day of November. Who's on board with me? :) November 1st: I appreciate all the support my mentors give me in the education world. I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for Dr. Mary V. Compton, Lynne, Dr. Diane Klein, Ms. Bednar, and of course my first teachers of Mom and Dad, for not giving up on & believing in me. ♥

November 2nd: Today I'm thankful for having a car that takes me on adventures. Recently someone asked why I drive so much/take so many trips and my answer was that it might have something to do with the fact that I didn't get a car until I was 20. Until then, my transportation consisted of borrowing vehicles, specifically the 1984 Astro family van. Once I had my own car, I was off and running..going to NJ (or trying to) for the weekend to visit Martin, seeing Monika in Bath, and of course driving back and forth to IUP, Pittsburgh, and the beach for school & fun times with friends, right Billie ?! This perspective only intensified after my car was totaled on the way to Texas in Summer 2011 when I had to get my "new" car unexpectedly...nowadays a trip usually means I'm going home to visit with Ashley or my parents. I'm already counting down to December when I get to go home for the holidays!

November 3rd: Today has traditionally not been a good day for me but I'm grateful that on 11/03/12 I have a roof over my head, food, water, and dry land around me. There is a large tree in the front yard along the driveway that reminds me every day about Super Storm Sandy since it fell down during the storm (away from the driveway) even though I didn't see 1 drop of rain while in Minneapolis, Minnesota earlier this week. My immediate family experienced some of the destructive winds & rain but are out of harm's way while friends back home did not fare as well. I'm struck by the love and strength pouring out of those who have given the shirts off their backs and traveled great lengths to share generators, basic toiletries, food, etc. For those of us far from Sandy's path of destruction, let us offer up prayers to those affected by the super storm!

November 4th: Last night, at mass, they sang, "Companions on the Journey", one of my favs. Then, I saw this on youtube. Today, I'm grateful for all my companions on the journey as we all get by with a little help from our friends!

Here are the lyrics to the song from church last night:
Companions on the journey

Refrain:
We are companions on the journey,
Breaking Bread and sharing life;
And in the love we bear is the hope we share
for we believe in the love of our God,
We believe in the love of our God.

No longer strangers to each other,
No longer strangers in God’s House;
We are fed and we are nourished
by the strength of those who care,
By the strength of those who care.

We have been gifted each other,
And we are called by the Word of the Lord:
To act with justice, to love tenderly
And to walk humbly with our God,
To walk humbly with our God.
Refrain:

We will seek and we shall find;
We will knock and the door will be opened;
We will ask and it shall be given
For we believe in the love of our God,
We believe in the love of our God.

We are made for the glory of our God,
For service in the name of Jesus,
To walk side by side with hope in our Hearts,
For we believe in the love of our God,
We believe in the love of our God.

November 5th: I'm grateful for unexpected friendships today. 9 years ago, in my first year of teaching in York County, I met Heather, when I "stole" her caseload at YCST. Who would have thought that today, I would be friends with her cousin, Jackie, and living in NC ?!?! We had an awesome afternoon yesterday checking out 2 wineries in the Burlington area. If I hadn't taken the LIU job in PA back in 2003, I probably wouldn't have the fun friend in Greensboro I have today in 2012. Funny how life works!!

November 6th: This morning, while standing in line at Food Lion, the customer behind me commented that I must be having a party. I said, "No, just trying to bribe my students". ;) He said, "I thought all the schools were out today" to which I replied, "Not at the college". He then proceeded to say what a good professor I must be to buy 4 different kinds of M&Ms for them at 7:30am & thanked me for "what I do". He didn't know that I forgot to remind the student who's turn it was to provide snack this afternoon...hehe. I'm thankful for all those who go out and do the best they can do in their chosen professions..you help to make the world a better place. I'm also thankful to cheerful customers in the grocery store who can brighten your day with a compliment. :-)

Happy Dissertation!

Forget about the turkey...today and yesterday have been devoted to Dissertation Day!  (My NC family is celebrating the best holiday ever on Saturday.)
As of 10:18pm on Thanksgiving Night, 11/22/12, my very very very very rough draft of dissertation equates to this =

Literature Review:  42 pages

Theoretical Framework & Conceptual Model:  8 pages

                     Methods:  23 pages

                                 References:  18 pages
  and
                                                                 one exhausted Meg!

City of Brotherly Love

As I sat here tonight, trying to get upcoming conference registration/travel costs organized for the conferences I'm attending/presenting at in 2013, I got curious and checked out where 2 of the conferences will be held next year (2014).  I was amazed when I saw the answer...!

The San Francisco conference I'm attending in April/May this spring is going to be in Philly next year!

2014
Thursday, April 3 - Monday, April 7
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The San Antonio conference I'm attending in April this spring is going to be in Philly next year!

Philadelphia
April 9-12, 2014

Can you believe they're back to back and in the same city??  I can easily drive up to PA, stay with my twin (if he'll have me), and go to the conference.  Plus, at that time, if all goes as planned, I'll hopefully have defended my dissertation by April 2014 and (fingers crossed) will have a job waiting for me.  I wonder if this means that I'll get my wish to have a job in PA after all...I mean things happen in 3's and should I go to both of these conferences, why not also have a job in the same state right?!

Things happen in 3's....

Today was the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time.  I went to mass at my brother's old church in Greensboro this morning.  This is the church I first attended when I would visit him during my NC trips, long before any babies were in the picture, and before I made the bi-weekly babysitting trips...

This morning, as I waited for mass to start, I couldn't help but reflect on my "church-time" here in NC.  I love going to different churches, in general, and enjoy each for very distinct reasons.  In Greensboro, St. Paul's has awesome music and a beautiful building, I immensely enjoy the homilies over at St. Pius and wish it weren't so far from home while I enjoy Fr. Chris and browsing the Lighthouse Media Cds kiosk at Our Lady of Grace.  Our Lady of the Highways and St. Benedict's remind me of my childhood church of St. Joseph's back home but I have to say that I love my church family I've found at Immaculate Heart of Mary where I am a parishioner.  The layout of IHM reminds me of my beloved St. Joseph's Church in York, PA, and of course the chapel at Maryfield holds a special place in my heart.

As I sat alone in the pew, at OLG this morning, I remembered the "record streak" I had when I first moved here for school in July/August 2010.  The record of something like 6 or 7 months of having my brother or a friend attend mass with me on Sundays, holy days, Stations of the Cross nights, etc. was incrdible!!  That was a special feat for me considering how many years I attended these events alone in PA!!!  Now, I'm back to attending mass alone, once in a while, when my schedule doesn't quite mesh with my brother's and his family's and I'm okay with that.  Sometimes, one just needs to sit and enjoy the peace and solitude in a church before or after a mass.

What I was reminded of this morning as I browsed the bulletin was that today is the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time.  Those, who are close to me, know that I enjoy the expression, "Things happen in 3's"...because they do!  Anyhow...a few weeks ago, I had thought of how I should probably enjoy this next year (2013) since I will be 33 and that might mean extra good luck of things happening in 3's.  ;)  I forgot about that fleeting thought but was reminded of it this morning when I opened my missal before mass and read this:  "The Lord says:  my plans for you are peace and not disaster;  when you call on me, I will listen to you, and I will bring you back to the place from which I exiled you." - Jer 29:11, 12, 14      This is one of my all time favorite pieces of scripture and I'm going to take it as a sign that I need to remember this now, more than ever, as we prepare for 2013!!

Then, during the homily, Fr. Chris emphasized that we, as Catholics, "Do not need to be afraid".  If you follow this blog, you might remember an earlier posting in which I talk about the meaning behind this song for me, especially since I've come down here to NC.

Yes, 2013 is going to be goooood!

Or maybe the Ravens will beat the Steelers by 33 points in a few hours?

Today is when one of my favorite football games in the season happens!!  =)
