Inching closer and closer to the due date!

These were my thoughts last week at 37 weeks and 3 days:  The doctor at today's appointment said that I'm 50% effaced and 1.5 cm dilated.  He said that it's to be warm (50s and 60s) this weekend so drink plenty of fluids.  He also said that I'm negative for Strep so hopefully that means I won't need IV antibiotics during delivery!

I have follow up appts. with two female doctors the next two Thursday mornings.  The last appt. will be March 3rd and we're still counting on the due date at being March 7th even though today's doctor said that there will be a full moon on Monday and joked about a 02/22 birthday for baby.

I feel good, although today was a little rough with headaches/achy/moody feelings.  Fortunately these type of days are usually on days I'm away from campus anyhow so that's good.  I've been waking at 5 and 6am instead of 2 or 3am during the night so am almost getting a full night of sleep compared to earlier in the 3rd trimester.

The bags are packed, birth plan is printed, and right now we're sort of in a holding pattern as the doctor said today.  :)

Update from today at 38 weeks 3 days:  We just got back from our morning appointment with our main doctor.  It was a good one as our doula, Sara, was able to meet the doctor and a lot of questions were asked.  There was talk of induction and what the hospital procedures are for once the water breaks, etc.

My belly measured at 39 inches and the baby's heart rate was fine beating between 120 and 128 beats per minute.  I only gained 8/10 of a pound since last week (in spite of all the ice cream/early birthday cake I enjoyed when Mark and Liz were here with the boys so I was happy about that..ha!).

Hanging out in one of my classrooms during the tour at school since last year when they came to visit we were snowed in and didn't make it to campus!

Thomas sporting and ice cream goatee at my favorite ice cream place in nearby West Virginia!

Check out the "nutritional" info. on the cup..hehe.

After Mark, Liz, Thomas, Ben, and Kona left, it was time to finish getting the bags ready....Hershey apparently wants to go to the hospital with us when it is time!

Loved the surprise "notes" in the St. Francis room for baby.  The blocks were still in their new formation from "Baby" to "A boy" courtesy of Uncle Patrick from New Year's..haha!

Thomas was so proud of his heart.  Aww!
At one point this morning, during our appointment, the doctor asked if I wanted her to "strip my membranes" which could possibly cause labor to start within 24/48 hours.  We opted for her to not do that in an effort to allow for as natural as possible of a process/birth but then talk occurred about what might happen if we go beyond the March 7th due date.  The latest they would allow me to go without induction is up to week 42 which is March 21st so maybe we'll have an Easter week baby?!

For now, there are no signs of labor at all, no contractions, baby is still high, and no further dilation compared to last week.  The baby is at a position of a - 3 (not sure if that's the correct terminology).  We'll see what happens next Thursday morning at 8:15am when we meet with a female doctor I've not seen yet.  The hospital tour is set for Saturday, March 5th, assuming baby hasn't arrived by then.  In the meantime, I transferred the baby playlist to the iPod tonight and I've got the bags at the front door ready to put in my car tomorrow when I go to work just in case.  ;)

Ooh, Baby I Love Your Way (post 30 of 30)

Sunday, 02/14/16:  36 weeks, six days

Today we completed our tour at the hospital.  After waiting in the waiting room for over an hour, we were able to get a quick look around the place.  The ten minutes to see the room where labor, delivery, and recovery will take place and then the postpartum room went by very fast!  I was surprised to see how small the entire Birthing Center was but then again, the entire hospital is pretty small.  The woman who showed us around was one of the regulars who used to check us in when we had our specialist doctor appointments so it was nice to see a familiar face there.  Adam and I asked a couple questions then we were on our way.  I felt a little bit better after having seen where we will potentially be in three weeks.  If baby is not here by March 5th, we plan to go to the scheduled tour/class that we are already signed up for but it was nice getting a quick preview.  What I wasn’t counting on was seeing a woman come in as she pushed through her contractions that were currently three minutes apart.  She could barely walk and was obviously just getting to the hospital for the start of everything.  We also saw another gal walk off the elevator during our hour plus of waiting in the waiting room who was hobbling down the hallway.  She glanced over at me and said, “I just had a baby on the 9th and am so sore”.  I did the math and realized that meant she had given birth five days prior….and it made me think of a colleague who returned to work within three days…!  It’s amazing how labor and delivery affects each woman differently and even the same woman differently from birth to birth.  I wonder how it will all go down (literally..ha!) for us?!  We also witnessed a family as they got a play by play of where the mother was in the labor process and within 20 minutes of learning she was pushing, they got the news the new little one was here!  They all joyously processed down the hallway to meet the baby and then a half hour later emerged saying how hungry they were and they were going to go out to a celebratory meal at a local restaurant.  We saw another man head out on the elevator only to return a short while later with a diaper bag and boppy.  I guess they were ready for that bag from the car now that the newborn was here!  I felt good about the baby bag (including boppy) that I had packed just last night!

This was a fun mural we saw on the first floor of the hospital.  Love St. Francis!!
Tonight, I also got the Birth Plan drafted and Adam approved it.  It is already sent off to the doula so she can give me feedback when she meets me at the next doctor appointment on Thursday afternoon this week.  One more item is crossed off our to-do list!  We also ordered a few things from the baby registry I will need for the big day so once they come in the mail on Wednesday, the bags will be nearly officially packed.

I also just have to give a little shout-out to my friend Lisa for her comprehensive and detailed blog postings that have been serving me as a guide throughout this journey.  Reading her experiences from her pregnancy with little Liam in 2012 and then rereading the birth story of Vera from last February is helping me to have an idea of what might come our way in just three weeks….eek!  So thank you, Lisa, for sharing your journey with your blog readers and giving me some peace!  : )  One of the things Lisa inspired me to do was to create a playlist after reading about how Michael created one for them to listen to while in the hospital.  So I dug out my iPod and speakers last night, am charging the iPod, and am currently working on getting the NC CD I made for Adam’s first trip to visit me, our wedding CD that I made for the members of the wedding party that contains songs from our mass and the first dance songs at the reception, and am also adding some of the songs from the surprise mystery gift we received in the mail of Celine Dion’s baby CD, “Miracle” copied into a playlist that I hope to be able to download to my iPod.  So thank you again to whoever sent us that CD in the mail several weeks ago!!  : )

Thursday, 02/18/16:  37 weeks 3 days

On Monday morning, when we turned 37 weeks, what started out as an excited Jamberry matching my shirt for the day after V-Day photo turned into the obligatory side view pic this morning (at my sister-in-law's request..Haha!). We so can't wait to meet our little one! I am having dreams it is a boy but Adam dreamt it is a little girl the other night. We shall know soon since the three week countdown to the due date is on now!  I had been waiting to wear this outfit since I bought the shirt from Kohl's in October during my first maternity clothes shopping spree and my mother-in-law gave me the "Love Spell" Jamberry wraps at Christmas time.  They were a perfect match with my outfit.  Sometimes it is the little things that make me the happiest...including loveable pups...check out the bottom right hand corner of the first picture to see them smooching. Ha!

Baby has been very active lately and I’m feeling the baby move in parts of my stomach that are different from what I’m used to…he or she is keeping me on my toes!  Today, the plush fuschia oversized robe I plan to take to the hospital arrived in the mail.  It is so comfy and I predict I will have many nights of snuggling baby in it throughout the late night feedings.  : )  I am still high energy for the most part…last night, I had to force myself to go to bed at 2:30am even though I could have kept on grading and doing schoolwork on top of the crazy long Marathon Monday I had just had at work!!  Then, this morning, I felt as if I were hung over and had a hard time getting up followed by a headache all day and feeling achy.  Go figure!  I’m just thankful that these days of not feeling my usual self are falling on days I’m away from campus anyhow.

Last night, I attended a Meet & Greet with other moms in the area at a local restaurant many of whom are wives of some of the professors with whom I work.  I said that in my introduction that it was nice meeting "the other halves" and hopefully getting to know them through this group.  I was surprised at the number of folks who were there (upwards of 20) and quite a few were also pregnant.  One girl is due in 1.5 week, another had her 2.5 week old baby with her, another is expecting baby # 8, and then there was me due in 2.5 weeks.  The women ranged in ages but there were quite a few younger moms who had multiple children and several were very good friends as the group dates back to the last 8 or 10 years.  I hope to be able to get to know many of the women and attend some of their social events (Wednesday nights are their social hour nights).  I also learned that the Dads get together on Thursday nights so maybe Adam will be interested?!

This afternoon I have a doctor appointment (now that we go on a weekly basis) but unfortunately Adam can't attend nor my doula at the last minute.  Hopefully it will go quick, all will be fine, and I'll be on my merry way!  This posting concludes the baby blog postings as we head into the home stretch. Thank you for joining us on the journey as I strove to capture some of the thoughts/feelings from this first pregnancy.  The love, encouragement, and support mean the world!!  Hopefully, I'll be able to share photos of the St. Francis room (guest room/nursery) with you very soon but in the meantime, I will close with the lyrics from one of my favorite songs from the mystery baby songs CD (Miracle by Celine Dion & Anne Geddes) someone sent us anonymously in the mail.  Enjoy!

Update from baby's progress at 37 weeks:

Baby fat forms to keep your baby warm after birth.
It’s week 37, and final preparations in the womb have begun. You have a reason to celebrate: Your baby is considered full term. Here are a few changes she is experiencing:  Her weight gain slows considerably but she has just a little more room to grow.  Essential fat (also called baby fat) will continue to form. This will round her out and help her stay warm after birth.

If you have an ultrasound during the 3rd trimester, the technician might measure your baby’s head, stomach, and femur to estimate her weight (She probably weighs more than 6 pounds now).
The last few weeks of your pregnancy are an exciting time, which could lead to the occasional sleepless night. To help make sure your nutrition is helping you get a good night’s sleep rather than preventing it, here are some tips for the duration of your pregnancy:

Eat light dinners. Big dinners might make you drowsy, but they also could prolong digestion, which can disrupt sleep patterns. Instead, try eating your biggest meal before midafternoon, and eat a light evening meal.

Eat an evening snack. Choose a light grain-and-dairy snack, such as crackers with low-fat cheese and fruit, or low-fat yogurt with toast and apple butter. Wait an hour before lying down. These foods will digest quickly so you can rest.

Starting now and in the weeks to follow, you might find that you can breathe easier. You also might begin to notice some big changes in your body:

Your baby might move down into your pelvis, so some of your late-pregnancy symptoms could go away.

Less pressure on your digestive organs might alleviate heartburn and constipation.

Digestion might be easier, too.

Your shortness of breath might dissipate as your lungs now have more room to move.

While you might feel less pressure in your upper body, you could feel more pressure on your bladder.

Your final checkups

During your 37th week, you, your husband, your baby, and your doctor are making final preparations for your baby's arrival. Your doctor sees you once a week until labor and delivery. Week 37 is a good time to finalize the details of your birth plan and to take time to relax.

Your weekly exam likely will include:
  • A weigh-in
  • A blood pressure test
  • An analysis of your baby's activity and movement
  • A pelvic exam to check your baby's position, height of fundus, and cervix dilation and effacement
  • A check for preeclampsia, which is high blood pressure during pregnancy
  • A check for vision changes such as blurred eyesight or seeing spots, which could be preeclampsia symptoms. Mention any eyesight changes to your doctor.
Getting ready for your delivery

Take time at this visit to speak with your doctor about your questions or concerns, such as:
  • What are the signs of labor?
  • When should I go to the hospital?
Between weekly appointments, let your doctor know if you experience vaginal bleeding or greenish-brown discharge, constant and severe abdominal pain, or decreased baby movement.

Ooh, Baby I Love Your Way (post 29 of 30)

Image result for boy or girl

Tuesday, 02/09/16:  36 weeks 2 days

Slowly but I’m getting caught up on the blog postings between grading and crossing off other items on the to-do list.  Earlier today, Melanie, a friend from Harrisburg, texted that she is confident I’ve been organized throughout the pregnancy.  I don’t know about that but I do know I’m trying to do everything in my power to get as much down now, on the front end, in attempting to have facilitate a smooth transition for my students and the subs who will take over during my maternity leave, in tying up loose ends, readying the house for baby’s arrival, trying to get our bags packed for the hospital, and thinking about getting baby’s clothes washed, dried, folded, and put away soon.  We have (sort of) narrowed down the girl name choices to four and have three tentatively selected for boy names.  I wrote them down on strips of paper this afternoon and when Adam is ready, we might just draw the two names from a baggie since we keep going round and round and round…!

Also, last night, I had my second dream that baby was a boy!?  Hmm!!!

Tonight, I just realized that this is the first time in five years I’m not going to a conference within my field of deaf education that I enjoy attending.  I first went to ACE-DHH in 2011 when Stef andI presented our NLCSD research in Jacksonville, FL and I got to reconnect with my undergraduate advisor after many years!!  The following year, I was able to present with Margo, Stef, and mycurrent advisor in Santa Fe, NM, where I saw Dr. Klein again and also spent time working on a presentation with another mentor, Rachel, who works in CA, that we were honored enough to present at another conference in April of that year (AERA conference in San Francisco!).  Then, my third year of attending ACE-DHH occurred in February 2014 the week before my job interview and several weeks after successfully defending my dissertation in Washington, DC at Gallaudet University.  Margo and I shared our history projectresearch at that conference.  Last year, in February 2015, I presented my dissertation research in St. Louis, MO and enjoyed celebrating Valentine’s Day with Adam in a new city for both of us.  This year, the conference fell too close to the due date to travel and is being held in New York City!  It is ACE-DHH week in the Big Apple so to all those who are attending, enjoy!!  I hope the conference is enlightening and rejuvenates your love for our field!  Who knows, maybe I’ll see you there next year depending on where it will be..?!

Friday, 02/12/16:  36 weeks 4 days

We had our appointment yesterday morning where I had to give blood, be tested for Strep, and found out I was not dilated.  The doctor also predicted we had about a month to go yet instead of three weeks.  We are now at the point where I will need to return for doctor visits once a week until the baby is born.  I am off from school the whole week of March 7th since that is spring break.  It would be great if baby’s arrival coincided with break so that I could make a clean break from work and the transition between the subs and myself would be a smooth one.  Or if baby has not arrived, I might return to work on Monday, March 14th, and keep working until the big day.  Who knows what will happen but I am hoping that everything will be smooth and we’ll be home from the hospital within a few days.  One of my friends who just had her 6th or 7th baby delivered Friday evening and was back at work Monday morning !!!!!!!!!!!!  I don’t anticipate THAT happening but it would be nice to be mobile and up on my feet within a few days but I realize that there is no way of knowing until it happens.  Another first time Mom in NC had unexpected complications and was in the hospital for five days…and didn't feel like herself until nearly two weeks later which is something I hope doesn’t happen with us but again there’s no predicting it I suppose.

I’m getting there with sort of feeling prepared (or as prepared as I can feel).  I alternate between feelings of panic/anxiety and being utterly exhausted from all the chores/trying to get everything ready….guess I can thank the pregnancy hormones for these wild feelings as of late.  Time also seems to be going super slow as the due date approaches.  This week was SO long.  I’m also hoping to also finish packing the hospital bag at some point this weekend and we have a three hour class scheduled for Saturday evening with our doula to learn about the Bradley Birthing Method/positions/what to expect/etc.  We also need to get the birthing plan written and printed.  It just seems like a never ending list of items on the to-do list and for every item I cross off my list, there is yet another item to tackle.  Who know having a baby would require so much planning?!  ; )

As of now after a 24 hour laundry binging spree, all the immediate clothing, blankets, and bedding have been washed and folded.  The diaper pail was added to the nursery tonight.  The baby toys are in the top rack of the dishwasher waiting to be washed and the diaper bag is drying as we speak.  I’ve not a clue what to do with the breastfeeding stuff but I figure there is no practicing with that and I’ll just have to learn during that first week of the little one’s life.  The car seat bases and seat covers are in the garage awaiting my twin’s help (the state trooper who is certified in installing car seats!) when he and his family come visit next weekend.  They were our first guests last Feb. and are coming back for the second time the same weekend one year later…so it will be nice to show them the changes to the house considering Adam was a “bachelor” living here alone when they were here the last time!

Saturday, 02/13/16:  36 weeks 5 days

Tonight we had a three hour class with our doula that wound up being closer to four hours due to the questions and side conversations we had.  She was full of helpful information and suggestions.  I told Adam after Sara left that I knew way more than I expected to learn as a result of the lesson.  I also had no idea how detailed and involved the actual delivery process would be!  I hadn’t before considered the afterbirth, the umbilical cord, the placenta, the technical aspects of breastfeeding in such detail, the bleeding for upwards of six weeks (!!!), and so forth.  In my mind, I only focused on the lead up to the delivery wondering if/when my water will break, if it would be when in the middle of teaching at work, will the labor pains be really painful, will we opt for Epidural or wind up with an all natural birth as hoped for, how long will the whole labor and delivery process be, are we having a boy or a girl, what will we name him/her, how long will we be in the hospital, and a million other questions.  However, I hadn’t thought of the fact that bleeding can last for up to six weeks, that breastmilk doesn’t actually come in until the third day, that some babies are born hungry and ready to nurse immediately after entering this big ol’ world, that stitching/repairs are typically done right then and there in the labor and delivery room as you hold your newborn, that I can decline the weekly checks of seeing if I’m dilated right now, and so much more.  To say my head was spinning at the conclusion of tonight’s crash course is an understatement.

However, I feel even more at ease about the unknown with having Sara as a resource and advocate in our corner for when the big day comes and I'm so thankful a friend at work, Amy, "introduced" us to Sara so that we would have the addition of a doula on the big day as well.…and hopefully my Mom as well as Adam.  We don’t know yet what my parents’ plans are but I really hope they are able to be with us from start to finish of the whole process!

I also found out tonight that I don’t necessarily have to wear the hospital gown while there.  We need to double check on the policy but I love the idea of being able to wear something more comfortable and that is mine instead of the generic gown provided by the hospital if possible.  We also picked up some microwaveable meals, animal crackers, and Clif bars to snack on while at the hospital.  The bags are nearly completely packed which is such a good feeling!  It was also interesting to realize subconsciously that I was thinking of the baby’s bag with the outfits, boppy, pacifiers, and so forth that it was “his” bag and the bag was nearly ready for “him”.  It seems that I’m thinking the baby will be a boy….I wonder if this will reveal itself to be true early next month?!

Update on baby's progress now that we're at 36 weeks:

At the end of week 36, it might give you comfort to know that the arrival is approaching quickly. Your baby is considered full term, yet he still has more growing to do. His bones are hardening, but his skull remains soft and flexible for birth.

He’s grown almost completely into his skin, which was once oversized and loose.

He now has a fully rounded face, in part because his powerful sucking muscles are now developed and ready to get to work.

During this 36th week, your baby probably weighs about 6 pounds or slightly more.

It's natural for your body to begin to slow a little as you get closer to your due date. You're now carrying a full-grown baby inside, and are continuing to adjust to loosening ligaments, swelling, and other challenges.

Continuing consistent, gentle exercise may help you fight fatigue. Walking is a great example of exercise you can usually continue through labor.

Balanced nutrition is not only nourishing you and your baby throughout your pregnancy, but it is also establishing a strong foundation for breastfeeding and your body's recovery after delivery.

Braxton Hicks contractions (the clinical term for false contractions) were named after the British doctor John Braxton Hicks, and play an important role in helping your body rehearse for childbirth. They might become more frequent as you edge closer to your due date.

Braxton Hicks vs. true labor contractions

Braxton Hicks (False Labor) Contractions True Labor Contractions
Irregular and remain irregular Regular intervals or regular pattern
Don't get closer together as time passes Grow closer together over time
Often are weak and stay that way (might have stronger contractions followed by weaker ones) Increase in strength/intensity over time
Stop when you rest, walk, or change positions Keep coming no matter what you do
Vary in length and intensity Usually last 30 to 90 seconds (shorter when they begin and get progressively longer and stronger)
Don't affect your cervix Cause cervix to dilate (open)
Pain usually felt only in the front Pain begins in back and moves to front.
